How to test your website speed

There are many different website speed test tools out there, each providing their own benefits and drawbacks. Below you can see what we’ve used over the years and test your sites yourself.

Pingdom Website Speed Test

Pingdom is a company that specialises in web-monitoring and creating reliable uptime, providing 24/7 monitoring to ensure your sites run smoothly. They also created an online tool to ensure your sites are loading as quick as possible.

This is what we use to test all of our websites to ensure they’re up to standard, and is reflected through our work page.

The benefits of using Pingdom is that you can test your site from different server locations all over the world. If you’re looking to go global you can test your site here to ensure it’s up to standard, if not you’ll know how to improve it, or that you need to create a global option.

Test your site

Google PageSpeed Insights

Google are always providing more online solutions for us, one of their online tools is PageSpeed Insights. It runs through your site and provides a score from 0-100 for different areas that affects speed.

The main benefit of this is Google Lighthouse. This collects accurate real-time data as users are on your site and provides statistics for the last month, as opposed to the server that runs the test.

You’re allowed unlimited tests for free, giving you the ability to change code / images and see the affect that it has on the speed.

Test your site

GTmetrix

GTmetrix tests millions of sites a week. It compares your site against the average of tests performed on the platform, letting you know if your site is performing compared to other sites.

One of the main benefits of GTmetrix is that you can compare your results against other sites at the click of a button, it creates a side-by-side view of the results, seeing where you’re performing better or worse. This gives you the opportunity to compare your site to competitors, or just against industry professionals.

Code Minification
